The #Dumbledore Twitter Challenge

dumbledorewantsyou
In July 2009 millions across the world walked into theaters to watch “Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince” that culminated with (SPOILER WARNING) the death of our beloved headmaster, Albus Dumbledore. As part of the larger What Would Dumbledore Do campaign where we are putting into action the real world lessons that Dumbledore has taught us we issued a challenge to the entire Harry Potter fan community: to take over Twitter by tweeting #Dumbledore as many times as possible.

Well, it worked! With the help of partners like Mugglenet, Leaky, John Green of the Vlog brothers, countless Wizard Rock bands and so many more (check out our partner groups on the front page) we really took over Twitter!

On the day of the movie’s midnight release midnight release from 4:30 pm EST to 1:00 am EST as a community we put out 12,527 tweets of #Dumbledore! In fact, from 4:30pm EST- 7:30pm EST people were sending out approximately 1866 tweets per hour! Many of us would go to one of Twitter’s main pages and our jaws dropped open as every few minutes the site would ask us to refresh as some where between three and five hundred new Tweets of #dumbledore would pour in. And it kept going with people tweeting as they walked in to the movie and as they left.

People from all over the world were tweeting remarkable things about how they felt about Dumbledore, about social change, and about the power of love.

Our volunteer staff was obsessively glued to the computer measuring this as it came in.

In the Half-Blood Prince book Harry say that Dumbledore will live on as long as there are those that are conscious of this. As a fandom we have the power for Dumbledore’s belief in the power of love to live on in our world – and with the success of the “Dumbledore Twitter Challenge” we can see just how many of us are passionate and enthusiastic about putting that message into practice demonstrating that we are part of a movement whose profundity and power continue to grow.

If you don’t know how this works yet, please check out our quick tutorial and please be on the look out for Twitter challenges in the future! We’ve proven we can do it once and we can do it again! And of course, please retweet this page to let everyone know this inspiring news!

I think that this is a great idea which will not only draw focus to WWDD but also cause people to pay more attention to what they tweet about. I know that adding #dumbledore to my tweets makes me want to be sure they’re something meaningful and good enough to have Dumbledore’s name attached to.
