My family, friends and I were ecstatic to hear about the President's statements on Wedsnesday. Because of his support, marriage equality will be a reality so much sooner!

I celebrated by attending the monthly PFLAG-Oahu (Parents, Families and Friends of Lesbians and Gays) meeting with special guests - Brandon Morgan and Dalan Wells, the famous kissing military men. We had a great time discussing the repeal of DADT and other progressive and protective policies the President has enacted while in office.

That day was truly historic!

As someone born in Tennessee and raised in its educational sytem, I can attest to the one-sided "appropriate" decisions that the system there follows. Firstly, Tennessee decided to nix the No Child deft Behind Act.....
In high school, science teachers were encouraged to teach creationism while completely refusing to teach any form of evolution. Many books were confiscate
d if they appeared risque or "offensive." I personally had three books taken from me in middle school....one of which was Harry Potter because my teacher was extremely devout and felt Harry Potter taught children witchcraft.
Seeing these things is very discouraging to me as an aspiring teacher. It wasn't until I began college that I saw what an education without the overwhelming Bible Belt value system, as we called it, was like.

Thank you for posting this, Kara. <3

When I was stuck in NTB on Saturday morning, getting my tires rotated and dumping MORE money into my car, CNN was on and was covering this whole thing in NC. I missed about half of the report (I'm guessing), but most of what I saw was a Republican...representative or something in NC. He was being interviewed by the CNN reporter via satellite. And while it was really funny watching him get progressively more irritated by her questions, it got my blood all boiling.

I could rant about this topic for hours (in fact, I did rant about it when I got home...my poor roommates), but the gist of my feeling on the matter is: who CARES? Who CARES if there's same-sex marriage? It's not effecting the straight marriages. I vote we stop trying to force everyone back to Biblical times with all of this nonsense that's going on---not just the same-sex marriage stuff, but also all the women's rights issues that have cropped up all of a sudden too. Interracial marriages used to be illegal too. And, hey, look...when things changed...NOTHING HAPPENED! The world didn't come to an end. It didn't ruin the "sanctity" of the non-interracial marriages. So why do people feel this undying need to "define" marriage? Why can't we all just agree that marriage should be between two people in love and wanting to share their lives? Because that's what marriage SHOULD be.

One day, same-sex marriage will be entirely legal. I fully believe that. I believe that we'll win this fight and I fully believe we'll see it happen in our lifetimes. And, you know what? When that happens, all these people with a stick up their butts about this right now will realize that...oh, hey...nothing at all changed for them. They still have their straight marriages, and the "sanctity" of marriage wasn't burned at the stake.

*deep breath*

These book bans are just becoming more and more ridiculous.

Kids need to learn about what is in these books, they need to be allowed to use their own imaginations, and people need to stop worrying about whether or not someone is going to be offended by these books and stories.

Keep on banning books, and more and more kids are going to lose interest in reading.

I read the saddest line I've ever come across the other day after reading a very well written fanfic. One of the responses to the story was this: <i> " I don't read books, I think it's a waste of my time."</i>.

I'm grateful for all of the books I read growing up! I was introduceds to so many FANTASTIC stories, so many classics, and sadly, so many of them are now on banned books lists. I learned so many things about history even through fiction ( because many pieces of fiction are based in parts of history that DID happen ).

Truthfully, though, if I ever had children of mine, and found out they weren't allowed to read certain books in school because of what someone else whined about, then I'd find ways to encourage them to read said books at home and on whatever free time they had. That's one thing both my brother and I have sworn since we were both little kids reading under the sheets with flashlights until 2 or 3 in the morning... îf we ever had kids of our own, reading would be highly encouraged with them.

Reading what we want is one of the freedoms we as Americans get the priveledge of having. Taking that away is almost as bad as telling us we can practice what religion we want then say that we're wrong in out beliefs. It's hypocracy. If I was told I couldn't read a certain book--and I'm not the only person that thinks like this, I'm sure--my first reaction would be to read it, either to see what's so bad or just to show that I have my own opinion and you can't take that away from me. Some people may see a book as harmless--which anything Shakespearean is as a general rule--and it's up to the reader's discretion.

Thank you, Evin! I'm glad I was able to share my excitement about your organization! I wish you guys the very best...you truly do amaze me!

(And good for you being fine with admitting to the tears. I was bawling like a baby through at least half of that book, so you weren't alone in that.)
