Wrock for Equality

wrock the vote

In October 2009 the HPA launched Wrock 4 Equality to stop the passage of Proposition One in Maine, a ballot (similar to November 2008’s Proposition 8 in California) that would repeal equal marriage. HPA members took to the streets and their phones in partnership with Massachusetts Equality to protect marriage equality.

Following an opening concert in Portland by Harry and the Potters and Draco and the Malfoys, HPA members in Maine canvassed in the middle of the pouring rain- knocking on close to 700 doors, reminding people to vote No On Proposition One, and even collecting about 30 absentee ballots so that Maine residents would vote early against Prop One – while members online across the nation phone-banked. All in all, our members called more than 3597 residents of Maine in just one day – a 1200% increase over Mass Equality’s previous record.

Wrock4Equality was a House Cup competition, where members earned points for each call made. Gryffindor won with 10,350 points. Wrock 4 Equality was mentioned in several major media outlets, including The Wall Street Journal, Change.org, the Orlando Sentinel here, the Portland Phoenix, and Irish Central.
