The Harry Potter Alliance’s campaign against the Starvation Wages Horcrux began with the letter we sent to Time Warner, parent company of Warner Brothers, on November 1, 2010, which invited them to switch to Fair Trade chocolate for all Harry Potter merchandise. We, along with our dedicated members and chapters, collected over 16,000 signatures on a petition to that effect, including signatures from Harry Potter actors such as Jason Isaacs, Evanna Lynch, Scarlett Byrne and Christian Coulson.
We received a response commending us for our attention to Fair Trade and affirming Warner Brothers’ commitment to ethical sourcing. And yet, in spite of the clear and immense support for Fair Trade from the Harry Potter community, Warner Brothers has not taken this issue seriously. Since their initial response we have been dismissed, ignored and evaded.
It’s time to step up our game. You can still sign our petition, but we need to increase the pressure. Help us stop Warner Brothers from using Harry’s name to sell chocolate made in inhuman and unfair conditions by making a Video Howler or sending a Cease and Desist letter. Please keep up to date with this campaign by checking in on Not in Harry’s Name.
The House Cup for the Starvation Wages Horcrux ended on December 31, 2010. Gryffindor was declared the winner. Congratulations, Gryffindor!
