Wizarding Stew: Current Events, Thoughts, and Celebrations
“The farther we’ve gotten from the magic and mystery of our past, the more we’ve come to need Halloween. October Dreams: A celebration of Halloween” –Paul Curan
There are many things that have happened during my lifetime, some of the most important happening in the last few months. The legalization of gay marriage, the beginning of America’s universal healthcare, the government shutdown, and the epicness of the ever-growing Harry Potter Alliance. Plus, it is my favorite season – Fall!- and a week away from my favorite holiday – Halloween!- so my mind is just a jumble like spells in a witch’s cauldron, swirling and swirling to oblivion.
If you haven’t heard, something awesome happened today in the state of New Jersey. Governor Chris Christie dropped his appeal on gay marriage, allowing legal marriages to truly come to fruition! The New Jersey Supreme Court voted unanimously to legalize gay marriage, making NJ the 14th state to legalize gay marriage and moving the Northeast closer to solidarity. My pesky state of Pennsylvania might hold out for a while longer. I mean, it has antiquated laws such as defining 6 women in the under the same roof without supervision as a brothel. Yes, that’s real. But, it’s still a great day for gay marriage and I can only hope that progress changes people’s minds…and fast.
I never thought that working for the government would be so dramatic. The shutdown affected in me in all ways, everyday. Stories of friends on the verge of defaulting on their loans, students not getting their funding, and families not being able to pay for groceries were just a few. On top of it, my lovely DC was a ghost town with depressed people and empty streets. However, there were some good things that came out of the shutdown. Local businesses and kind people were showing their true colors though; local restaurants were handing out free food (from burgers to cupcakes!) to furloughed workers and businesses were giving major discounts (sometimes being completely free) for government workers to use their services (shout out to Washington Sports Club!). At least there is constant evidence that people are good at the bottom if it all.
It’s almost time for NaNoWriMo!!! Have you ever thought about being a novelist? I have been gearing up for this month for a year (kind of). Last year, I just couldn’t get a story to stick, characters to develop, or a coherent idea that really made me passionate. This year, I have something a-brewin’! Will it be a murder mystery after Jo’s new genre debut? A YA story after reading the Hunger Games/Book Thief/Divergent? What about a self-help novel full of a new-found spirituality? For now, I am scoping out the forums and beginning to plan where things are going to go. AND there is a kick off party to meet the gang here in DC! I can’t wait, the more help the better. YOU should do it too!
The fall spirit has fully taken over my way of life! Pumpkin pie, bread, pudding, coffee, and soup have all made their way through my kitchen this month – and I’m still not done! Add some apples and butternut squash, and we have all of Emily’s favorite things. It’s finally cold enough to reeeally enjoy a hot cup of tea (preferably Earl Grey), is there anything better? And, it is almost time for Halloween, the day when any old person can battle a giant, meet dead witches, and stake out the Great Pumpkin. For one night, we get to live in our own fantasy world where we can step away from our normal selves and become something extraordinary and literally fantastic. Anyone have any literary costume ideas? Pass them on!!!
And last but not least, HOLY MOLEY GO EQUALITY FTW!!!!!! We almost DOUBLED our goal and totally hit this thing out of the quiddtich field! Annnnnd it was the HPA’s birthday. Too many things in a row to celebrate! We are awesome, our friends and supporters are incredible, and I can’t WAIT to see what world-changing things we are going to do. With such magical, passionate people, we are going to do more than imagine better – we are going to DO better and change the world. Especially after using all those perks. No edge kickball, lead the way!
