Worldbuilders 2012: The Nerd Activist’s Paradise

I love Heifer International. But then, you probably know that already, since I keep writing blogs about them. They are an incredible organization that is helping to end world hunger by providing livestock, education, and supplies to people in third-world countries. The awesome thing about this is that it provides people with a way to provide for themselves–it’s a long-term fix that helps make the world a better, happier place. And not just today, but for the future as well.

And you know what else I love? Wait for it…stories. Yep, bet you didn’t see that coming. Well, it just so happens that one of my favorite stories in the world is The Name of the Wind and it’s sequel, The Wise Man’s Fear, by Patrick Rothfuss. Seriously, if you haven’t read them, you need to stop everything, right now, and go do it. You’ll thank me later.

Now at this point you’re probably wondering what the deuce these two things have in common, or if I’m just rambling at length. Well, here’s the link: Worldbuilders.

Worldbuilders was started by Patrick Rothfuss a few years ago, and it is truly the Nerd Activist’s dream come true. Essentially, the Worldbuilder campaign is a lottery where you donate money, and you can win all sorts of awesome and amazing goodies. And by awesome goodies, I’m talking about signed books and rare books and super cool books, and all sorts of nifty things that make my little nerd heart happy just thinking about. And the really great part is that all the proceeds go straight to Heifer International.

Yeah, seriously. How awesome can life get? Making the world better and winning awesome books at the same time. It’s enough to make you weak in the knees just thinking about it, and once you see the list of books and things he’s got lined up, I guarantee you’ll get a full case of the colly-wobbles. He’s got too many for me to list here, and he’s constantly adding more, so, you should really head over to Pat’s blog and check it out.

To my mind, the Worldbuilders campaign is the absolute coolest thing ever. It’s such a great example of fans making the world a better place, and having a great time doing it. Last year, the Worldbuilders campaign raised a stunning $310,000 for Heifer International, and something tells me that this year is going to be even better. They’re shooting for half a million dollars this year, and I say we help them get there. So head over to the blog or the fundraising page, and let’s make the world brighter for everybody involved.

OMF KARA! I was honestly just about to send out an email about this but I was waiting until this year’s project started. HOW ARE YOU READING MY MIND!? I first heard about The Name of the Wind from Andrew during Accio Books 2011, and this is so an HPA kind of thing. :)
