So Much of Me is Made of What I Learned From You
We’re the internet generation. That much is certain. Never before have so many people been able to connect with others who share their loves and share their passions as much as now. It’s really cool, if you think about it. Daily, we all talk to people who we’ve never seen in person, or who we see in person only very rarely.
Just last weekend, I was able to meet and have lunch with Erin, one of the other bloggers. We sat down together and talked for almost two hours about everything from our favourite fandoms to the HPA. We’d never met each other in person before, but it was as if we’d just seen each other the day before.
After I left lunch, it really made me think about the communities that we build and the barriers we break down through the internet. The internet brings so many different people together, people that would have no ability to meet otherwise.
Even more than creating communities, the internet has developed a power to change minds, change hearts, and change the world. Let’s look at the way legislation has been affected by boycotts and petitions and internet activism, or how people’s minds have been changed through vastly diverse communities. We’ve become a truly global community, one which is slowly but surely starting to truly understand each other.
I know that I’ve made some amazing friends via the internet, friends who have changed my life in so many ways. Really, I’m reminded of Galinda from Wicked. When she first got to Shiz University, Galinda thought she knew everything, but after meeting Elphaba and sharing their lives for just a while, she started to understand things that she had never even thought about before.
And now whatever way our stories end
I know you have re-written mine
By being my friend… ~Galinda, For Good
The internet has changed lives and changed the world, I personally think for the better. What about you all? Does anyone have a great internet meetup story? I’d love to hear about it!
