Vermont

Equal marriage is now legal in Vermont! Vermont was the first state to pass civil unions.

They are also the first state where same sex marriage was passed by the state legislature. In every other state it has happened through the courts. In the case of Vermont, the governor tried to strike this down with a veto but there was so much support by the state legislature that they overrode any potential blocks by the governor.

Iowa and Vermont have now joined the ranks of Massachusetts and Connecticut to expand the opportunity for equality and protect the institution of marriage in the name of love. HOORAY!

UPDATE: Washington DC may not be far off.

I sense a chain reaction. I hope it keeps going until all of the states have legalized love.

I’m so excited by this step forward. This is fantastic news! Today Vermont, tomorrow…Texas!
