The Beginning
“The Beginning” is the aptly named title of the last chapter in “Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire.” And it should be the title of what’s happening now for the LGBT movement in the wake of Proposition 8 (or as some call it Proposition Hate) which stripped human beings in California of their right to same sex marriage.
For years the loudest voices around the issue of same sex marriage have been voices of hate and intolerance, but the winds are shifting. While the HPA tried to stop Proposition 8 from passing, what I have seen so far is that since Proposition 8 passed, the loudest voices are no longer coming from the hatefully homophobic who mask the intolerant violence they are inflicting on other people’s lives with passive aggressive catch phrases about protecting the family. No. The loudest voices are coming from gay rights activists who understand that “family” is under threat so long as consensual adults are not allowed to build families. The passage of Proposition 8 and the subsequent stripping of Californians’ right to marriage has fueled a new beginning in the movement for equal rights. People all over the US are taking to the streets and their state capitols demanding rights for all of us.
So to all of those nutters who think they’ve managed to stop love from being legal, while you’re selling us all short, you’re capacity to do so won’t last much longer. For the US movement for Equal Rights has reached a new beginning. And now that the bottle has been opened, it won’t be closed until same sex marriage is completely legal. Thanks for your help in motivating the rest of this country to stand up for equal rights! Any one who is depressed about the outcome of Prop 8 can remember these words from Bob Dylan about 25 years ago:
“The line it is drawn. The curse it is cast. The slow one now will later be fast. And the present now will later be past. The order is rapidly fadin’. And the first one now will will later be last, for the times they are a-changin’.”
Indeed. So hold on to your safety belts. Or better yet, get involved. ‘Cause this thing just started.
