Is Lord WaldeMart going after high schools?

Have you seen the WaldeMart videos yet?

Wal-Mart Watch sent out an email today asking if Lord WaldeMart is taking money from your local high school. And they need your help in finding out!

It turns out that Wal-Mart is selling “school branded athletic clothing at cheaper prices” than the high school and then reaping all the profits. “Thanks to license agreements, colleges get a cut of the profits on these kinds of products, but there is nothing to prevent Wal-Mart from creating its own merchandise for a local public high school.”

So in a tough economy people are bound to buy high school shirts and sweat pants for a cheaper price from Wal-Mart. But then the economy gets worse for the local high school. “Schools use the profits from their branded apparel sales to support their athletic programs and other school activities.” These are local fundraising efforts!

So Wal-Mart Watch is asking your help to “see just how widespread this practice is.”

They are asking you to da bit of Harry/Ron/Hermione-like sleuthing and go to your local Wal-Mart as soon as you can and investigate for yourself then report back to them. “Click below for more information and for a form to submit your findings:”

They want to hear from you either way so they “get a fair and accurate assessment of these reports.

“Wal-Mart loves to brag about its paltry donations to local communities and school programs. But, is Wal-Mart going against its promise to support its communities by taking money away from public education?

“This company has a well-documented history of putting local stores out of business in every community it moves into. Now, it appears Wal-Mart could be taking on your local high school, too.

High schools simply cannot compete in a price war with a giant corporation – and they shouldn’t have to.

Visit your local Wal-Mart today and find out if they are engaging in this practice and report back”

I love the Waldemart videoes! I have always, or at least since they started practically taking over a few yaers ago, resented Wal-Mart and disliked/tried to avoid shopping at them. Now I am going to absoloutely stop! They are even more awful than I thought, now that I know some about their healthcare policy and other facts that were presented in the video.

(*Note: The following is a fictional example and is in no way accurate, nor does it claim to be)

Walmart t-shirts: avg. $10.00 with a 10% markup…so the cost per shirt for walmart is $9.00.
Let’s say they have 100 shirts to sell.

School orders own shirts via sportswear manufacturer. 100 shirts, with a bulk discount, at only $7.89 a shirt. School still makes $2.00 profit a shirt at a price that is below Wal-Mart’s.

So, the school sells their shirts, Wal-Mart is forced to mark their’s down to get rid of the inventory at a price below cost. Wal-Mart loses money.

It’s not being evil. It’s called business. Maybe the local highschools should teach that to today’s children instead of worrying about how much more money is spent in the athletic department while departments like music, art, and special education are drastically cut.

My school system has a uniform policy but the students have to go to the store and buy their own uniforms. since Wal-Mart is the cheapest place in town (the only other store that sells the uniforms sells the pants at about $13.00 and the shirts at around $12.00 the uniform sweaters can go from anywhere between $15-$30.00 as opposed to getting the whole uniform for $20.00 at Wal-Mart) to buy them. I think that it would be better for all involved (namely the less-fortunate students who can’t shop at Aeropastle) if the school would buy the uniforms and maybe have the students pay a small fee, say around $3.00 per uniform, that would get lumped in with the rest of their fees that they pay so that they can go on feild trips and stuff. That way there would be no differences in uniforms except for the boy/girl variations and they would make a profit out of it as well. Both a friend of mine and I had the same idea so we’re gonna see if we can talk to the school board abou it. I think that some of you should as well.
