Whompy's Weight Loss Challenge Ep. 2: Melissa's First Vid
Hey guys! It’s my first post here on the HPA and I promise not all of them will be about weight, but I am so inspired by Matt and my Fitties and their willingness to turn the HPA’s central themes of change and positivity toward health, that I couldn’t be prouder to post my first vlog as part of the Whompy’s Weight Loss Challenge. I hope you’ll all join in and start chasing your own health goals! And please be patient, I don’t do this vlog thing, I’ve only ever recorded myself on iSight once before and that was for my cat, so, um..yeah. Anyway, I hope you enjoy, and I hope you’ll join in!

This really pisses me off. Since when does weight loss have anything to do with being healthy?? Yeah, news flash – you can be healthy AND fat. Even overweight! In fact, there have been studies proving that overweight people live LONGER than average, obese, and underweight people. I am SO sick of the idea that everyone needs to LOSE WEIGHT to be HEALTHY. All you need to be healthy is to eat nutritious foods and be active regularly. Your body will decide based on its genetic makeup what weight you are going to be, and what weight you function best at, and that’s NOT always within the range that society has deemed “acceptable” or “ideal.” Forget weight loss. Health is a wonderful goal, weight loss? Not neccesarily. It might come along as a benefit, but it shouldn’t be the only goal. I hate that HP is trying to force body politics on us. Don’t we get enough of that from the media already??
Edited for language.

While I appreciate Lia’s comment (she makes some really good points), I don’t so much enjoy her use of foul language. Let’s try to keep it clean, people!
Great vid, Ms. Anelli. You’re working so hard! I’d never be able to share this kind of thing with the world. :]

I don’t think the HP Alliance is forcing anything on us. I know I’m here to support both Melissa and Matt in their journey. I myself am inspired by their hard work and dedication to whatever goals they have concerning health. A very positive aspect of both their vlogs is the emphasis of healthfulness (NOT beautification) in their lives, which is advantageous to everyone.

I think it’s awesome that you guys are doing this. I am 21 and have always struggled with weight going up and down, and I just started working with a personal trainer about a month ago. I would never be brave enough to broadcast the whole process on the internet though, so kudos to you. I look forward to seeing what tips and advice you both have to share.
And to Melissa, I always justify the afternoon cup of coffee because I know I personally always get in a much better workout at night when I have that little extra caffeine. Maybe its reasonable… maybe its not… but I figure if it keeps me going at the gym it has to count for something, right?

Lia, that’s patently untrue. When you are overweight you VASTLY increase your chance of heart, kidney, and liver disease, you are subject to more injury, and your body just cannot function as well. There are an overwhelming numbers of studies and reports that say this, including ones from the American Medical Association. Do you have a source of the report you quote? Because I think you should, as that’s a very irresponsible and dangerous message to put out there without backup.
You can be mildly overweight and be healthy, this is true. You cannot be obese and healthy. “Fat” is a subjective term and has no bearing on whether or not you are healthy, unless you can show me exactly where “fat” begins on all people.
As we’ve said repeatedly, this IS about health. But it’s incredibly irresponsible to put out the message that weight has no affect on your health, so we are not going to do so many people a disservice by saying that it doesn’t at all matter what you weigh. It absolutely DOES, but it’s not the be all and end all of health, and you don’t have to be skinny, and you don’t have to be a hardbody. You just have to be in a range where your body is not in danger of collapsing. That’s a start toward healthy.

I said this to Matt too, but just know that you inspire me
Also, I am currently on a caffeine ban because of some vocal concerts coming up, so I am totally with you on how hard it is to cut coffee out! I was drinking decaf for awhile, but I have decided to limit that to once a day to go along with you.

You guys are so incredible! I could never go on a healthy living plan and broadcast it to the world.
I think that for a food goal of mine I want to cut out a lot of the unhealthy foods I eat. It’s hard to avoid, as I don’t have the time or the money to prepare the things that are the best for me, but I think I can cut out things like 3 chocolate covered granola bars (Mmm, yummy) a day or stop eating pudding before supper (Or for breakfast *Smiles guiltily).
My other goal is to excercise more. I take the bus everywhere, and don’t walk or ride a bike or even play some sort of sports, so I think my excercise goal will be to walk home from work at least once a week. I live an hour’s walk from work so it’s really empowering to walk home and helps me realise that it can be fun to exercise.

Lia: “Since when does weight loss have anything to do with being healthy??” -> seriously???
“there have been studies proving that overweight people live LONGER than average, obese” –> I really mean this: SERIOUSLY??
This article would have it all wrong then: http://www.pubmedcentral.nih.gov/articlerender.fcgi?artid=1169083. This one as well: http://www.nih.gov/news/pr/mar2005/nia-16.htm
And I could list many more…
The statement you are making are not only false, but ludicrous.
Anyway – Melissa, I’m all with you. And for you coffee issue, look for “Stovetop Espresso Maker” on Amazon… They come in all sizes. Perfect for one cup. Sorry for the advertisement here, but Bialetti makes very good ones, as well as a Cappuccino maker (I love it!)
